Catheterisation is a blind procedure that can result in medical complications and catheter related injuries. On completion of these training modules the user will have enhanced their professional practice with increased knowledge and skills on this procedure.

To promote patient safety the modules include the indication/contraindications, maintenance and prevention of complications for the practical aspects of suprapubic and urinary catheterisation.

On completion of this course, users will be able to:

  • Apply and integrate knowledge and skills on the practical aspects of urinary catherisation including the urinary drainage systems using the best available evidence
  • Prevent, minimise and manage complications such as catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI), catheter balloon injuries etc
  • Observe video and adhere to guidelines for changing a suprapubic catheter  
  • Demonstrate safe and effective working knowledge of catheter insertion management and maintenance to prevent complications and the promotion of patient safety
